Applying foundation on your face sometimes gives you a flawless look or sometimes result in a patchy, streaky or cakey mess.  This article mainly looks at liquid foundation with or without using a powder on top.

Applying foundation do not require much skill, here are some mistakes that could make you having to remove the foundation and do it again:

MISTAKE 1: Rushing the process

Two-way cakes may allow you to apply makeup on the go, however, 2-in-1 foundation powders tends to dry the skin a little more than liquid foundation.  Depending on your philosophy on face cleaning in the morning, for example some women like to clean their face and then prep for makeup.  Some women such as Salma Hayek believes you clean your skin the night before and do not clean in the morning; she believes that sleeping overnight produces good cells that help to renew your skin.  Whichever philosophy you opt for, you should require some time for the skin to absorb moisturisers and primers as base and take time to blend in the foundation.

MISTAKE 2: Forgetting the moisturizer and primer

If you have dry skin, a cream moisturizer or moisturizing lotion should be applied as base, with an option for a primer for dry skin.  If you have oily skin, a hydrator is an option before applying primer for oily skin.  There are primers for combination skin too.

MISTAKE 3: Treatment of makeup tools

Foundation applicators include brushes, disposable sponges, beauty blending sponges, silicon sponges and your own fingers.  For liquid foundation brushes, it is better to use synthetic brushes for liquid foundation as the natural fibre tend to be more porous than the synthetic brushes and traps more of the liquid instead of transferring.  When applying the liquid foundation to the face, put big dots around the face in order to blend it more evenly for the whole face.  Whichever tool you choose including using your own hands, much care has to be taken on clean applicators to avoid blemishes.

MISTAKE 4: When to put concealer

Concealer for blemish scars or dark eye circle should apply after the foundation and before loose powder.  Applying before the foundation is redundant as it will smudge all over the place when the foundation goes on.  Concealer colour should not be too far off from the foundation colour.  It should be just a little lighter than the foundation colour.  It is important to put a little of concealer and add if not enough.

MISTAKE 5: Too much of everything

Too much liquid foundation and too much powder will not give you a natural flawless skin.  Limit the amount of foundation, if it is not enough then add.  Applying too much concealer will draw attention to the area that should be hidden.
