This is one of the most basic curly hair care tips but most often forgets. Always comb your hair from bottom up. This can allow you to gently detangle each knot, without having compounding knots toward the bottom which generally just yanks your way through. It can also protect hair from damage! For a better detangling result, you should use a wide-tooth comb. Never ever ever use a brush to rake through curly hair as it can disrupt the natural curl pattern.

2. Use A Gentle Curly Hair Shampoo

It’s a common belief in the curly hair community that shampoos that defrizzes the hair is curly hair go-to but well it isn’t! Majority of shampoos sold in the market are often designed for women with fine hair and those shampoos that promise to fix frizziness generally are packed with a high content of sulfates, which rob the hair of moisture and moisture is so for curls So, it is best to get curly hair shampoos as it can refresh your hair and scalp without stripping away too much of its natural moisture and oils.

Our favourite curly hair shampoo is the Tresemme, Botanique, Curl Hydration Shampoo. Packed with Shea Butter & Hibiscus Oil this shampoo is only RM 25.55

Many curly hair ladies often skip conditioning their hair because they don’t want their hair to be too ‘soft’, but girls listen to us and make sure to apply conditioner and leave it on your hair for about 2-3 minutes, right after shampooing. Generally, conditioners that are packed with natural botanicals are the best answers to the needs of your hair as they aren’t harsh and contain wholesome essential nutrients for the hair. But when you are conditioning your hair AVOID THE SCALP💇😻! Because your scalp naturally produces moisture and overly hydration can lead to itchiness and dandruff issues.

We recommend the Tresemme Botanique, Curl Hydration Conditioner.  Packed with moisture and a delicious fragrance, this conditioner is a winner that only cost RM 25.55!

4.  Do Not Wash Your Hair Everyday!

Here is one of those uncommon curly hair care tips, where you just shouldn’t be washing your hair every day. Though many believe that shampooing is actually great for curls because the key to healthy perfect curls is a healthy scalp. And our scalp generally cleanses them so washing your hair 2-3 times a week is good enough. Washing your hair every day can also strip away the scalp’s natural oils and moisture which can affect the health of the hair. However, conditioner is your friend so frequently apply conditioner even if you don’t shampoo your hair.

Do you use blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons like all the time? If so, then stop it immediately. All of these thermal tools lead to breakage and especially if you have curly hair these tools can make them more frizzy and lead to dryness and itchiness.  As hard as it is, but please try to wean yourself off of the heat. Opt for air-drying your hair naturally. Optionally, if you want firmer curls then twist your wet hair with your fingers or on foam rollers and let it dry naturally.

If you still insist on using heat on your hair, then opt for a diffuser. It will minimize frizz by evenly distributing heat, and it’s much gentler than the direct heat from your hairdryer. But when you are diffusing make sure to diffuse the RIGHT way.  In other words, don’t just put the diffuser right on your head and blast it with heat. A big NO-NO, sis 🙅🙅!!!

Here’s how to use a diffuser the right way on your curls:

  1. Start drying your roots first. Go in using circular motions in the same direction.
  2. Continue drying, keeping the dryer at a 90-degree angle to your scalp.
  3. Then, diffuse the ends of your hair
  4. Finally, hit the cool button on your dryer to lock in shine.

Yes, this does sound like a lot of work and because it is 😂 But, if you want nice, perfect looking curls then make sure to put in the effort to take good care of your hair.  Don’t just pin the diffuser to your head. Patience is the key here. Also, remember you don’t want to overheat your hair, so keep both the heat and power on medium.

10. Sleep On a Satin Pillowcase

Did you know the type of pillow that you sleep in is one of the main causes of many hair woes like dandruff, falling and more? Yes, rough and unwashed pillowcases can cause your coils to tangle and be frizz which in over time can lead to hair fall and dehydrated looking curls. So, make sure to change your pillowcase every week and it is best to use smooth satin pillowcases. Optionally, you can also wrap your hair in a satin scarf or bonnet to keep curls sleek and intact.

11. Tie Your Hair Up in a ‘Pineapple’ Bun

Last but not least in our expert-approved curly hair care tips list is tying your hair up in a pineapple bun, Huh,  ‘pineapple’ bun, what is that 🍍?! It is a simple hair technique to protect your curly hair when you sleep. Done correctly, this cool hair method can help you create a beautiful pile of curls on the top of your head, which resembles the shape of the obvious, PINEAPPLE!

Here how to a simple pineapple bun:

  1. Gently gather your hair into a high ponytail. Do not—twist it around to tighten it!
  2. Let half of your curls fall to one side, and a half to the other
  3. Simply remove the scrunchie the next morning
  4. Lastly, shake out your hair from side-to-side. That’s it

Again, we repeat DO NOT tighten your pineapple bun. By loosely securing your curly hair on the top of your head, pineapple bun prevents tangled hair and preserves your curls. The best part: it’s so easy, there’s pretty much no way to screw it up🤣🤣!
