The first hair transplant treatment was performed in 1939 in Japan with single scalp hairs. It was then brought down to the United States in the 50s. But techniques have changed a lot in recent years. Today, physicians use the “plug” technique. This involves transplanting large tufts of hair. Is Hair Transplant Treatment Suitable For Everyone? 

Sadly, NO! Hair transplants don’t work for everyone. The treatment is mainly used to restore hair if you’re balding or thinning naturally or have lost hair due to an injury. And most transplants are done with your existing hair, so they’re not as effective for people who don’t have enough “donor” hair sites from which to remove hair for transplant. How Does Hair Transplant Work? 

Hair transplant treatment takes hair from one part and then transfers it to an area where you don’t have hair. There are two types of hair transplant treatment. One is Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) and another is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Both typically occur under local anaesthesia. In both methods, healthy hair follicles are harvested from the donor area and closing the area with sutures. Both methods will give you a natural finish. 

In The FUSS Method

The surgeon removes a strip of skin around 6-10 inches depending on your need from the back of your head. Then, they close the area where the scalp was removed with stitches. Next, they separate the removed portion of scalp into small sections called grafts. After that, using a needle or blade, the surgeon makes small holes in your scalp and inserts hairs from the removed piece of scalp into the puncture holes. They then cover the surgical sites with bandages or gauze.

In The FUE Method

The surgeon will shave a section of hair from the back of your scalp. Then, the doctor will remove the hair follicles one by one from there. You’ll see tiny marks where each follicle was removed and these areas will heal as your existing hair will cover them. During the treatment session, a surgeon may transplant hundreds or even thousands of hairs. Once the treatment is over, they then cover the surgical site with bandages or gauze.

How Long Is The Hair Transplant Treatment? 

The whole process of hair transplantation could take up to 4-8 hours! And the results are not immediate. You cannot have full, long hair in just one go. It can take several months for the transplanted follicles to grow new hair and you may require up to three or four sessions to achieve the full head of hair you desire! Sessions occur several months apart to allow each transplant to fully heal.

Is Hair Transplant A Risky Procedure? 

Just like any kind of surgery,  hair transplants have some risks. The most common ones include bleeding and infection. You will feel slight soreness and tenderness for several hours after both types of surgery. There’s also the chance for scarring and unnatural-looking new hair growth.
