As we get on in years, our skin starts to lose its hyaluronic acid content. Essentially, 50% of a body’s hyaluronic acid content is present in the skin. Hyaluronic acid prolongs the lifespan of our cells and contributes to our skin’s overall barrier function. Additionally, collagen that is naturally present in our body houses both water and hyaluronic acid to create building blocks for our cells. Also, hyaluronic acid is a humectant that helps our skin retain its moisture. Hence when hyaluronic acid depletes as we age, our cells won’t be able to contain water properly. As a result, this leads to a breakdown in collagen and in turn our skin’s elasticity over time. What is a Profhilo treatment?
Basically, a Profhilo treatment is an injectable skin-remodelling procedure that uses a high concentration of stabilized hyaluronic acid. Being an anti-ageing treatment, it specifically targets and treats skin laxity by bio-stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. In addition to using 100% pure hyaluronic acid, the treatment also uses a combination of high and low-molecular hyaluronic acid (32mg each) to improve the overall texture of the skin.
How does it work?
Generally, you can apply this treatment to the face, neck, hands and chest to address signs of ageing like saggy skin, fine lines and wrinkles. After consultation, aesthetic doctors will locate your Bio Aesthetic Points (BAP) to inject the Profhilo formula under the surface of the skin. For the face, the BAP technique requires 5 specific injections on each side of the face so as to minimize bruising and discomfort. Normally, a patient will require 2 to 3 sessions to see visible results with one month of rest in between.
Since hyaluronic acid is a humectant (meaning it attracts and retains moisture), it functions as a hydrator for your skin. Hence by infusing your skin with hyaluronic acid, it gives the skin a more radiant and firmer appearance. On the whole, the procedure itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
What are the benefits of a Profhilo treatment?
Besides plumping up your skin with moisture, a Profhilo treatment helps to improve the overall elasticity, texture and tone of your skin. It also helps lift your skin and give it a healthy and luminous glow. Although most patients opt to get this treatment on their faces, it can also be used to smooth out the skin on the neck, chest, hands and even knees.
How is Profhilo different from dermal fillers and skin boosters?
Although Profhilo, dermal fillers and skim boosters all utilize hyaluronic aid, the technique and molecular size of the hyaluronic acid used are different. On one hand, the main purpose of dermal fillers is to improve volume and fill out dents in the skin. Also, aesthetic doctors normally inject dermal fillers into the deeper layers of the epidermis. On the other, skin boosters inject low-viscosity hyaluronic acid fillers into the middle layers of the epidermis to replace lost hyaluronic acid and restore the skin’s moisture content and elasticity.

What is the downtime of a Profhilo treatment? Any side effects?
Downtime is minimal and you will be able to carry on with your usual activities after treatment. Generally, you may experience some mild redness and swelling. However, it should subside within 2 days. Also, there are usually no side effects as Profhilo is bio-compatible and your body will be able to metabolize it over time.
Who is eligible for a Profhilo treatment?
This treatment is suitable for anyone who has mild to moderate skin laxity concerns. On the whole, this treatment is better suited for individuals with mild saggy skin, fine lines and wrinkles. Since Profhilo works well on thicker skin, men can also opt for this treatment.
Can I combine a Profhilo treatment with other treatments?
Yes, it is generally safe for you to combine Profhilo with other aesthetic treatments. Additionally, it can even serve as a complementary treatment to dermal fillers to improve the skin’s volume as well as texture and tone. However, it is important to always consult a certified medical professional before proceeding with any additional treatments. Also, it is best to avoid wearing makeup and going into a sauna for the first 24 hours after treatment.
