What is Skin Laser Treatment?

Skin laser treatment, commonly known as laser resurfacing, is a procedure that uses laser beams to eliminate the skin’s outer layer. This treatment is ideal for various parts of the body, including the face, neck, chest, and hands. The wavelength or light emitted by the laser helps to address the skin conditions, including age spots, uneven skin tone, scars, and even tattoos. Actually, there are several types of lasers that can be used specifically to cater to different skin issues. Among the list of lasers available are non-ablative resurfacing laser and ablative resurfacing laser.
How Many Types of Laser Treatments Are Available in Malaysia?
According to Veo Clinic, there are two types of laser skin resurfacing treatments: ablative and non-ablative.
Ablative laser treatment
An ablative laser treatment removes the epidermis, the surface layer of your skin. This controlled process vaporises damaged skin tissue, exposing the dermis, the deeper layer beneath.
The laser generates heat, which tightens skin tissue and stimulates collagen production. Collagen is a fibrous protein that provides structure to the skin. As the treated area heals, new skin cells form, resulting in a more even texture with reduced scars or wrinkles.
While ablative laser treatment produces noticeable changes, recovery can take up to two weeks.
Non-ablative laser treatment
The non-ablative laser is a gentler treatment that does not destroy the epidermal layer of the skin. Instead, it targets the dermis by applying heat with the laser, which stimulates collagen production and new skin cell growth.
During the procedure, a local anaesthetic is applied to numb the treated areas. If the entire face is being treated, a general anaesthetic may be used. The practitioner then uses a laser to either remove skin or reach a specific depth, depending on the treatment being performed.
Moreover, the recovery period varies based on the type of treatment received. You will also be given instructions on how to care for the skin at home.
Who Makes a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?
WebMD mentions that there is a group of people who may be suitable candidates for the treatment, including those with shallow acne scars, fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, or forehead, and sun-damaged skin. Additionally, individuals with age spots or those who have not responded well to a facelift may also benefit from laser skin resurfacing.
It is important to consult with an experienced doctor to determine if this procedure is right for you.
What are the Benefits of Skin Laser Treatment?
There’s a reason why skin laser treatment has been the procedure that people opt for during lunch time. Although it can bring significant changes to the overall complexion, many people swear by this treatment due to its benefits.
- Helps to reverse the signs of ageing
- Promotes smoother and softer-looking skin
- Evens out the skin tone
- Diminishes the appearance of scars, such as acne scars
- Minimises the size of enlarged pores
- Supports collagen production
- Increases the skin’s elasticity
What are the Side Effects of Skin Laser Treatment?
Laser resurfacing may cause side effects, although they tend to be milder and less common with non-ablative methods compared to ablative ones.
Based on the Mayo Clinic, the side effects include:
- Swelling
- Burning sensation
- Itchiness
- Changes in skin colour
- Scarring
- Infection
Things to Know Before You Go For The Skin Laser Treatment
Protect Your Skin with Sunscreen
Remember to protect your skin from sunburn and tan prior to the treatment since further exposing it with laser can actually cause permanent discolouration. Likewise, you also need to protect it from harmful UV rays after the treatment, as it can cause scarring.
Change Your Lifestyle
In order to expedite the healing process, you should change your lifestyle before and after the skin laser treatment. For those who are smokers, it is advised that you quit smoking for up to two weeks. Plus, you need to avoid using any skincare products that are formulated with retinol and glycolic acids. You can consult with your physician if you are taking any medications or supplements that are known to inhibit wound healing.
The Results Are Not Immediate
Contrary to the popular belief, the results are not instant, and it can take months for you to see visible improvements. Therefore, it is imperative that you follow the instructions given by the medical professionals on the at-home care.
The Downtime Depends on the Treatment
As much we like to say that the skin laser treatment has minimal downtime, it actually depends on the type of laser used during the procedure and the healing process rate. For those who undergo the ablative laser treatment, it can take up to three weeks for your skin to heal. On the other hand, non-ablative laser treatment has no downtime, so you can resume your daily activities as usual.
It’s Suitable For Darker Skin Too
The majority of people presume that skin laser treatment is only ideal for those with light skin, however, it’s only half true since there are certain types of lasers that are suitable for darker skin as well. Additionally, the medical professionals will advise you on the ideal treatments, including Erbium laser resurfacing or radio frequency treatment.
How Much is the Price for Skin Laser Treatment in Malaysia?
Generally, the price range of the skin laser treatment in Malaysia is between RM500 and RM2,000 for a session. However, the price varies as it depends on the targeted areas, type of equipment and number of sessions needed.
