Why is my hair so dry?! Is that a question you always ask yourself. Well, we got the answer to that. Your hair is dry because your scalp is not making enough oil to moisturize your hair, or your hair lets moisture escape. Unlike skin, hair does not produce natural lubrication. It relies on oils produce at the roots to keep the rest of the hairs moisturized and healthy. Sometimes, hair doesn’t make enough oil, which leads to dry hair.

One possible reason for hair dryness can be ageing. As we age, our hair naturally makes less oil. Other factors could be nutritional deficiencies, excessive sun exposure or over usage of heat or harsh products on the hair. Some possible medical causes of dry hair may be anorexia nervosa, Menkes disease, hypoparathyroidism, hypothyroidism, and other hormone abnormalities. If hair dryness is left untreated it will also dry up the scalp since the roots are under your skin, the dry scalp goes along with dry hair. Dry scalp peels and sheds, leading to dandruff flakes on your shoulders.

But don’t worry about having dry hair doesn’t mean that you have a larger health problem, or that there’s something wrong with the hair. Blow drying is the fastest and easiest way to dry the hair but it is not good for the health of the hair! The effect of this flash drying is that the cuticles the hair’s outermost part become dry, rigid and brittle. So, when you comb your hair with weak cuticles the hair will break easily. So, ideally, don’t blow-dry your hair! Of course, this isn’t a realistic option for many women but it will help mitigate the damage. Try using a containing glycerin and propylene glycol because these ingredients reduce water evaporation. If you are going to blow dry your hair anyways, use the low heat option and keep the dryer at least 6 inches away.

Ironing dry hair causes cracking along the edges of the cuticles, which can lead to breakage. Ironing wet hair, on the other hand, causes the moisture to burst out in little steam explosions. This causes a bubbling and buckling of the cuticle that appear as tiny hair blisters under magnification. Both types of damage can lead to breakage and split ends. So, it the best to stop using these tools and if you are going to put the heat to your hair make sure to use a heat protector spray. It will keep your safe from all the bad heat.
