There were countless details to fixate on in Maison Margiela’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2024 Show in Paris, designed by the legendary John Galliano. Galliano’s love of theater and dramatics featured prominently in the mesmerising Artisanal show. Exhibit A: extravagantly dressed models walking like marionettes down a runway-slash-street lined with old-fashioned lamp posts. But out of all the drama, dare we say that the makeup stole the show?

The models were made up to look like living porcelain dolls with glistening, fragile-looking skin, razor-thin eyebrows, and overly accentuated features. The look sent the internet into a frenzy to this day, with people rushing to try and recreate the porcelain doll effect. If you can’t quite manage it, you’re in luck, as the mastermind behind the look herself, the incomparable Pat McGrath, has shared her secrets with the world. We are truly not worthy.

Not only did McGrath reveal the beauty products she used for the Margiela show, she also made an entire two-hour masterclass on Instagram Live last week. Going step by step in her creative process, the most influential makeup artist working today blessed the world with exactly how she created the now iconic look. Hear that girlies, Dame Pat McGrath said real women don’t gatekeep!

As expected, the reflective glass skin effect is not an easy feat to achieve. After makeup, the Pat McGrath team combined several gel masks with distilled water before using airbrushes to spray paint the skin of the models. Eight layers of the mixture were packed on, using a hairdryer to set each coat before applying the next. Water-based glue was also added to certain parts of the face for longer wear.

Enough dilly-dallying, below is the full list of products used for the Pat McGrath Margiela makeup. Don’t fret if you missed the big reveal, as the full video from McGrath’s Instagram Live will be released soon. If you’re amongst the millions who have speculated non-stop about the look, did you get any of the products right?

An Iconic Look For The Ages

We can’t get enough of watching beauty enthusiasts all over the Internet trying their hands at the look. If there’s one thing our Insiders love, it’s creativity expressed through makeup. It’s a shame that this iconic Pat McGrath Margiela makeup isn’t the most fitting look for everyday. Apart from the fact that walking around with reflective glass skin isn’t very practical, mixing a handful of different gel masks and using an airbrush machine every day sounds like too much work. Luckily, that won’t be necessary much longer.

Like the makeup goddess she so obviously is, McGrath announced during her Instagram Live that she is developing her own singular product that will achieve the look. What a Queen! So if you’re thinking of adding all the items listed above to your shopping cart, we suggest that you wait for the new product by PAT McGRATH LABS instead. We’ll keep you posted when it’s finally available for purchase, so stay tuned to Beauty Insider.
