Colour correctors – do you actually need one? 100%, yes. Once you get the hang of it, colour correctors can do it all, from faking a good night’s sleep and camouflaging blemishes to even hiding stubble or blocking eyebrows. If you’ve ever tried to use a concealer or foundation on top of a really red pimple, but it still showed up pretty red, you’d probably benefit from using a green concealer before applying your regular concealer or foundation. But how does exactly does using green concealer help with concealing red pimples? Well, it’s all got to do with colour theory.

How To Use A Colour Corrector

Let’s take a look at a basic colour wheel.

Notice how red is directly opposite to green? That’s essentially all it is! When a green colour corrector is used on a red pimple, the green cancels the red out, neutralising (or balancing) the colour of the pimple. This creates an even base; something that’s not too red, so that your concealer can properly do its job of concealing the pimple, rather than mix in with the red.

You can apply the same principle to other parts of the face too, like dark circles underneath the eyes. If you take a close look at your dark circles, you’ll notice that it’s actually a shade of dark blue, as it’s the veins peeking through your skin. The opposite of blue is orange, so apply a tiny bit of an orange (or red, if you have a dark skin tone) colour corrector to neutralise the dark circles. Trust us, this will be a game changer in your makeup routine.

Colour Corrector Cheat Sheet

  • Green: To neutralise acne or pimples
  • Orange/peach/red: To hide dark circles
  • Purple: To brighten yellow undertones

P.S: the aim of a colour corrector is to correct the colour, not to conceal. All you need is the smallest amount, and be sure to blend it into your skin really well. Another pro tip: let the colour corrector dry for a minute or two before applying your concealer or foundation on top.
