Botox is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments not just in Malaysia but all around the world. Many women and men have rested their trust in the power of botox to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, and all signs of skin ageing.

Despite its popularity, there remains a ton of myths and misinformation about botox in Malaysia, including the process, price and risks. That is why Beauty Insider Malaysia is here to put these rumours to rest and answer all your burning questions about botox in Malaysia with help from an expert.

1. What is Botox?

The term ‘Botox’ comes from the word botulous, a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. This substance can inhibit muscle movement and can prevent wrinkles from developing or worsening. However, do take note Botulous contains very high levels of poison so if not handled with care it has the ability to paralyze and even kill someone. However, don’t worry doctors generally use very little dose for cosmetic purposes where they insert it into your skin through injection.

2. How Does Botox Work?

Botox works by blocking the nerve signals (neurotransmitters) to certain muscles. A neurotransmitter is a signal released by the nerve to the muscle to move. Botox depletes a neurotransmitter thereby inhibiting the muscle from moving. In simpler term, Botox basically prevents you from having full control of your facial expressions. So, your face muscles then become more relaxed, which in turn reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the skin.

3. What is Botox Used For?

Botox in Malaysia is primarily used for aesthetic purposes while in rare scenarios it is also used for medical reasons. Thanks to their ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles, Botox is widely used to temporarily relax the facial muscles that underlie and cause wrinkles. Medically, Botox is used to treat problems like repetitive neck spasms, excessive sweating, overactive bladder and lazy eye. Botox injections are also used to treat chronic migraines in some people.

4. What Happens During a Botox Treatment?

There are various methods of how botox is done. In general, the first step of the process is to numb the area. Topical anaesthesia, ice and vibration anaesthesia are used. Then. the doctor uses a thin needle to inject tiny amounts of botulinum toxin into your skin or muscles. And that’s pretty much it. The whole process is very short and has zero downtime.

5. How to Find The Right Doctor To Get Botox in Malaysia?

This is one of the best things to consider before getting botox in Malaysia. When you are picking for a doctor or clinic don’t just rely on prices alone. This is not ideal because most clinics will not reveal the factors that affect the low pricing. So, the best way to find a reliable and trustworthy doctor is to do lots of research. Make sure the clinic that you’ve chosen is MOH (Ministry of Health) approved and the doctors have the proper certifications to carry out the treatments.

Word of mouth referrals from friends and family helps too. Keep your options open and shortlist a few clinics then arrange for a consultation visit. Talk to the doctors and ask examples of their previous patients, which will give you some idea of his/her experience. Also, check if the clinic offers follow-up sessions and if they come at additional cost. Ultimately, the doctor you choose should be someone whom you’re completely comfortable with.

6. How Many Botox Injections Are Needed?

Of course, it varies from person to person. But the common industry average would be around 20 units for forehead wrinkles, and between 2-10 units for crow’s feet. The actual number of injections needed depends on the depth of your wrinkles or lines. The strength of your muscle determines how many injections you need also.

7. What Are the Areas That Can Be Treated Using Botox?

Botox

The most common areas to get Botox is around the eyes, forehead and between the eyebrows. These are the areas that form a wrinkle faster when they move. If the muscle is no longer able to move the same way, the wrinkle softens

For aesthetic purposes, Botox can be used at:

  • Frown lines
  • Marionette lines
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Eye wrinkles
  • Nasolabial folds

For medical purposes, Botox can used at :

  • Spasms of the eyelids
  • Severe neck and shoulder muscle spasms
  • Chronic migraine
  • Excessive sweating
  • Strabismus
  • Detrusor overactivity
  • Post-stroke spasticity
  • Overactive bladder
  • Hemifacial spasms

8. How Much Does Botox in Malaysia Cost?

Botox price in Malaysia depends on the ‘areas’ or ‘units’. Each “area” of Botox can range from RM800 – RM2400. Whereas, the units cost vary depending on the clinic. Don’t worry if it’s your first time, and you’re unsure about the pricing. The doctor should be able to guide you through that in your first session.

9. How Long Does Botox Typically Last?

According to many of the dermatologists we spoke to said,  botox typically can last up to six months if the proper amount is used. It can wear off much sooner if the dose is too low.  However, the longevity of Botox greatly depends on your body’s ability to metabolize the neurotoxin. So, it actually varies with each individual.

10. How Often Can You Get Botox?

Botox is one of the fastest aesthetic procedures that has zero downtime. It takes 48- 72 hours to work, at times taking up to 5 days to work. Generally the last quite long too so you don’t need to get Botox too often. You can go for botox with at least four months apart in the same area. Getting Botox too often can lead to permanent paralysis of the targeted muscles.
