For as long as I can remember, I have had super dry skin and seborrheic dermatitis. Finding the right skincare products for my fussy and sensitive skin has been a real challenge. In fact, my skin is so sensitive that even exposure to water can trigger a painful and itchy flare-up. And between the hot and humid climate and air-conditioning indoors, let’s just say my skin hasn’t been very happy with me. So when I got the opportunity to try Mia Jane’s Hydro Glow Serum, I jumped at the chance!

Mia Jane Hydro-Glow Serum delivers a surge of moisture in every drop

Besides having a rigorous moisturizing routine, I find that certain active ingredients are extremely helpful in alleviating itching and dryness. This includes hyaluronic acid and oat kernel extract – both of which are present in Mia Jane’s Hydro Glow Serum!

Hyaluronic Acid

As a humectant, hyaluronic acid acts as a moisture magnet to draw moisture back into the skin. Because of its amazing water-retention capabilities, it also helps to lock moisture in place and fortify the skin’s moisture barrier. Also, by effectively plumping up your skin with moisture, hyaluronic is able to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Over time, incorporating hyaluronic acid into your skincare routine consistently is great for fortifying your skin’s moisture barrier and regulating oil and moisture levels. In turn, this helps to keep dehydration as well as sebum production in check.

Oat Kernel Extract

Next, oat kernel extract is brilliant for soothing inflammation and itchy skin flare-ups. That’s why it’s such a popular ingredient in skincare products that address inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Essentially, oat kernel extract comes from grinding down whole oat kernels and it is also known as colloidal oatmeal. In addition to a skin-soothing agent known as beta-glucan, colloidal oatmeal also contains lipids, phenolic antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents as well as omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to effectively soothe itching and irritation.

Cactus Extract

On top of hyaluronic acid and oat kernel extract, the Mia Jane Hydro Glow Serum also contains a calming blend of cactus extract, chamomile flower water, trehalose and D-panthenol. Cactus extract is rich in linoleic acid and acts as an astringent to detoxify the pores and regulate sebum production. It also contains a high concentration of electrolytes and vitamins to hydrate your skin and protect it from environmental aggressors.

Chamomile flower water

Just like colloidal oatmeal, chamomile flower water is another great ingredient for soothing redness and irritation. Because of its natural antibacterial properties, chamomile flower water also helps to treat acne breakouts and prevent new ones from surfacing. Moreover, it also aids in wound healing and is a highly effective treatment for soothing sunburns and rashes.

Trehalose and D-Panthenol

Trehalose is a sugar that you can naturally find in various plants and fungi. It has similar water retention properties to hyaluronic acid. Hence, it functions as an excellent moisturizing agent for dehydrated skin. Finally, we have D-panthenol which is a registered with the National Centre for Biotechnology as a skin protectant with anti-inflammatory benefits. In addition to boosting the skin’s hydration levels, it also soothes redness and improves the skin’s texture and elasticity.

My Mia Jane review

Because of my sensitive skin, I am very particular about what I apply onto my skin. So after taking a look at the Mia Jane Hydra Glow Serum’s promising list of ingredients, I decided to give it a go. After two weeks of incorporating this into my morning and evening skincare routine, here’s my verdict!

Verdict: I love it!

I love how calming and refreshing it feels on my skin. Sometimes, I even pop my serum into the fridge for 30 minutes to level up the cooling effect during application. After cleansing my face, I immediately apply 3 drops of the serum onto my face and neck area. Instead of simply just slapping it on, I like spreading the serum onto my fingertips and gently pressing it into my skin. On days when I’m feeling particularly indulgent, I apply a thicker layer of serum and go in with my jade roller to massage the serum onto my skin. Also, I highly recommend that you exfoliate your skin at least twice a week with a gentle acid to improve the absorption of the serum.

Another tip that I recommend is to apply the serum immediately onto your skin after a shower when it is still damp. This is because your skin is at its most absorbent when it’s still damp. Also, applying a hydrating serum onto damp skin helps to lock moisture in place and prevent transepidermal water loss. After the first week, my skin started to feel more calm and even the irritation was much less than before. The dry itchy and scaly patches on the sides of my nose and the inner corners of my cheeks were also starting to disappear.

By the end of the second week, my skin has been feeling so much more radiant and hydrated. In the day time, I usually apply a thin layer of the serum under my moisturizer and sunscreen. I love how lightweight it feels on the skin and can be easily layered under other skincare products. It’s now my new favourite SOS skincare must-have for dry skin days!
